The Sylvan Elves

I will admit that I do not know everything there is to know about the Sylvan (Wood) elves, they just aren't my area of expertise. But, I know enough to give them their own section of my page, so here goes (p.s. e-mail me if you have more info) cross your fingers boys and girls

The wood elves live in tribal families and clans. Both men and women hunt and fight, most children are considered adults at the age of fifty (12 human years). Many of the Sylvan elves become rangers, warriors who protect the forest and its inhabitants from harm, and others become druids, priests of nature. On almost all fantasy worlds the wood elves are outcasts to most of their other elven-kin and are considered savages and uncivilized (kind of like how we treated the Native Americans when we first came here).

Wood elves are often hunted down and sold into slavery. Because of the harsh treatment received from their kin and humans, the Sylvan elves are very distrustful of outsiders and have a tendency to shoot before they ask questions.

On almost all fantasy style worlds, the Sylvan elves tattoo or paint themselves with intricate designs which the not only wear as sign of station, but also as a form of camouflage. Everything that a wood elf owns is both portable and useful.

The best literary examples of the Sylvan Elves are the Kagonesti from the DragonLance world of Krynn and the Moon elves from the Forgotton Realms land of Toril. My pick for a good book on them would be Firstborn and The Kinslayer Wars from the Elven Nations trilogy. They are both from the TSR world of DragonLance.
